Pro-Structured Settlement Attorney Becomes ABA President-Elect

Posted on August 14, 2010

On August 10, famed U.S. attorney William Robinson was named president-elect of the American Bar Association.  Founded in 1878, the ABA is the largest voluntary professional association in the world with more than 400,000 members.

A partner at the law firm of Frost Brown Todd in Kentucky, Mr. Robinson is an expert in civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels.  He has extensive experience in commercial litigation, class actions, product liability defense, environmental litigation and medical malpractice defense.

“Bill Robinson is a legal visionary and one of America’s most respected attorneys,” said Mike Kelly, president of the National Structured Settlements Trade Association.  “We congratulate him for this achievement and for earning the deep respect of so many of his fellow attorneys.”

In 2001, Mr. Robinson authored "Don't Overlook the Structured Settlement," a lengthy article in For The Defense magazine, a publication of DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar. An excerpt:

“[A]fter well over 20 years in defense work, I am convinced that a crucial part of the solution is the more frequent and more strategic use of structured settlements.

“Given the continuing problem of escalating trial verdicts, defense attorneys and their clients may be more inclined, as never before, to avoid trial in personal injury lawsuits. But how can the defense attorney achieve the best settlement possible for the client?

“In recent years, structured settlements have become an increasingly effective way to settle difficult physical injury claims.  They are now utilized by attorneys representing all sorts of clients, including prominent plaintiff attorneys.  Structured settlements have also won praise from such diverse groups as insurance associations, advocates for the disabled, consumer groups, and the U.S. Treasury Department.

“The defense lawyer who truly wants to best serve his or her client will do well to become intimately familiar with structures, why plaintiffs find them attractive, and how, working with a professional consultant with a proven track record, a structured settlement can help them resolve cases earlier and to the substantial financial benefit of the defense client.”

About structured settlements and the NSSTA:

Recognized and encouraged by the federal tax code since 1983, structured settlements provide strong financial security to victims of physical injuries and their families. Using a tailored stream of payments, a structured settlement provides a long-term payment stream that is completely exempt from state and federal income taxes.

A structured settlement's future payment stream is funded through a highly secure life insurance annuity. For a free handout that describes some of the consumer protection regulations that bolster the security of a structured settlement annuity, please click HERE.

The National Structured Settlements Trade Association (NSSTA) represents nearly 1,200 licensed consultant, brokers, insurance companies, and other professionals involved in establishing and administering structured settlements.
